2021.10.08. ROCK CANDY SUCCESS!

For our third club meeting, we conducted a rock candy experiment. Although this did bring back bad memories of last year (we failed last year), we decided to conduct another rock candy experiment because according to the student response form, the majority of the members wanted to conduct a rock candy experiment.

This time, we divided our club members into two groups and each made our own rock candy. THANKFULLY enough, everyone was really prepared and enthusiastic about conducting the experiment, so we finished the experiment relatively quicker than last year.

We followed the 1:3 water to sugar ratio and followed the exact same steps as last year. Weirdly enough, one group succeeded and the other did not.

Here are some photos of us!

We all really boiled the sugar water until it became transparent, but the team that made purple rock candy succeeded and the team that made green rock candy failed. We predict this may most likely be attributed to the boiling time.

After making rock candy, we had too much sugar left, so with the remaining sugar, we created dalgona candy! Since Squid Game became so popular, we wanted to follow the trend into making dalgona candy. In fact, the making of Dalgona also has it’s own chemical reaction. When you add a pinch of baking soda to the melted sugar, it immediately bubbles up, turning golden brown. Therefore, we had a few members that added too much baking soda, and their dalgona mix became really fluffy and over-gassy.
