Sixth day of summer camp…! Similar to the lesson we had last Monday, the ACS Chemistry Club members came to visit and help out with a lab safety rule-based class. This week is focused on the lower division of the students (currently in 1rst and 2nd grade), so we had less students to teach, but thankfully, it was equally as interesting and exciting.
When it comes to younger children, I think the high, spontaneous bursts of energy are quite inevitable to the point where the students just randomly stand up from their seats and start dancing. So interestingly enough, I think it was more difficult to lead the classes with the lower division students than the upper division, which actually had more students than the lower division.
One of the students, in particular, was very engaged in the activity of making the lab safety rule posters. He was more proactive than the teachers in acquiring the materials to draw and color the posters and overall, was very well behaved. (I do wish the other student became motivated to follow directions as well, but he was overly into his dancing.)
The other student continuously refused to draw his poster, so we tried to encourage him by singing a song about lab safety rules, and thankfully, he still drew a “lab instrument”, according to what he said. Honestly, it was difficult to understand what he was saying about this drawing, but I remember he labeled the blue solution as ‘dangerous water’? Maybe he meant it’s dangerous to ingest unknown chemicals in the laboratory.. Oh, also, I realized that for younger students, they’re especially more motivated and become more aware of the directions when you physically demonstrate the activity. (So I drew a mad scientist, and my friend drew a lab safety rule poster)
